Broadcast, Record, Moderate: Hangout Features Announced

Updated 20 September Google+ hangouts were one of the most exciting features of the new service, but hangouts are limited to 10 active participants. This limitation makes a lot of sense for interaction, in fact 10 active mikes could be pretty ungainly! Broadcasting hangouts removes the limit for people watching the hangout. According to +Robert McGee, broadcasting was in test last week; it’s now live and called Hangouts On Air: The setup is simple enough: just start a normal hangout, and you’ll … Read entire article »

Hangouts Now Support ASL Chats

Hangouts Now Support ASL Chats

If you’ve participated in a hang-out, you probably noticed that the main image (the large one) is voice-activated. That is, when a person “starts talking” Google’s software detects who is speaking and shifts that person to center-stage. This feature can be disorienting if there is actually a conversation, and it’s useless in a hangout where participants are “talking” using sign language. +Chee Chew announced “take the floor” which is designed for ASL hangouts. Feature Update: Collapse Comments On Long Discussions

Feature Update: Collapse Comments On Long Discussions

One of the challenges of popular posts on Google+ has been navigating through (or skipping!) extended comment threads. Google+ comments remain unthreaded (which means there is one long list; in other words, you can’t directly comment on a comment), but it’s now possible to “collapse” them. Before this feature, the only way to clean up your stream would have been to mute (hide) the post. Moreover, Google says that they’ll keep track of which comments you’ve … Read entire article »

Google+ : Must Be 18 To Play In Field Trial

Google has upped the age limit on Google+ from 13 to 18 for the field trial, “until we’re confident that we have the right teen safety features in place.” Lots of teens have wondered about the age limit and how Google knows their age. The reason Google asks about ages is the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998, which defines “child” as someone younger than 13 years of age. There are restrictions on the kinds of … Read entire article »
